Intro:

Create an awesome 3D text effect with various photoshop filters (Plastic wrap, Blur, Sharpen) and other tricks that will make you a text effect master! Below is what we're going to be making with this text effect tutorial:

3D Bulge Text Effect
Step 1:

Open a new file with the dimensions to your likings, I used a canvas of 500 width and 200 height, with a #323440 background color. Open this texture and drag it onto your canvas, go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Change the blend mode to Luminosity and opacity to 11%.

Step 2:

Type your preferred text with the text tool ofcourse, and give it a warped text effect. If you have no idea where to go next for the warp effect, familiar yourself with the warp icon in the screenshot below.

Change the warp settings to:

Step 3:

Now we're going to make the 3D effect for the text, it's very simple so just follow the steps I outline and you should be fine. Rasterize your text layer by right-clicking on it in the layers pallette and choose "Rasterize Type". Make sure you have the move tool selected. Now we're going to whip out a neat shortcut trick, HOLD the ALT key and press the Up-arrow key 9 times. I'll explain what we just did, by holding ALT and pressing one of the arrow keys you'll duplicate the current selected layer and move it 1 pixel to the side of the arrow key, so in our case thats upwards since we pressed the up arrow. Easy huh?

Step 4:

Right-click the top layer, so that's copy #9 and change its blending options to:

Your text should look like this

Step 5:

Open up the same texture we used earlier and drag it on to your canvas, make sure this texture is on top of everything. CTRL + Click the copy 9 text layer to make a selection around it, then hit CTRL + SHIFT + I to inverse the selection, now hit delete to remove the outer part of the texture so it'll only cover the text. Change the blend mode of the texture to Soft light and the opacity to 73%.

Step 6:

It's gradient time! Make your foreground color black (#000000) and take the gradient tool with the foreground to background gradient, Ctrl+Click copy #9 in the layers pallette to make a selection of it, create a new layer "Gradient" and drag a nice gradient from top to 3/4 of the text. Then take out 2 circles with the Eliptical marquee tool and change the blend mode to Overlay

Step 7:

Repeat step 6 but with a white foreground, starting from the bottom, and only cut out 1 round piece. Change the blend mode to Overlay too and opacity to 43%.

3D Bulge Text Effect

Make another white gradient but from top the 3/4, and don't cut out anything, just change the blend mode to Overlay and opacity to 16%.

Step 8:

Add a layer adjustment by clicking the layer adjustment icon:

A menu will pop out, from there choose "Levels" and change the Input Levels to: 30, 1.19, 245

Step 9:

Add another layer adjustment, now choose "Color Balance" and change the settings to:

Shadows: +7, +9, -100
Midtones: +10, -32, -51
Highlights: +5, +8, +2

Step 10:

Now we're really going to make the final touches of this text effect, it'll come to life real good, watch! Make a new layer on top of everything and go to Image > Apply Image to copy every layer we've made onto the newly created layer. Then give it a gaussian blur by going to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur and give it a 5.2 pixel radius.

3D Bulge Text Effect

We're not done yet with this step, it was just the beginning! Go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap, and change the settings to:

3D Bulge Text Effect

Press OK

Now that looks a bit weird huh, well with a simple layer move we're going to turn it around completely. So Move this layer BELOW all your text layers but keep it on top of your original background. The layer we just made functions as our new background layer.

Now with ONLY moving this layer it will look like this:

3D Bulge Text Effect

We can say we're done with this step now Happy
Step 11:

The last thing we have to do is sharpen everything, it will give us a far more better result then we have going now. Make a new layer on top of everything and "Apply image" (Image > Apply Image), then go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen.

And we're finished with this awesome 3D text effect!
